Piping

This set of articles will go over the Pipes modeling workflow, tools, and tips.

Piping Workflow Overview

The EdgeWise Piping module has the ability to save you a significant amount of time on modeling projects. This article provides a quick start guide for the piping workflow to go from point cloud to a finished pipe model. While this Piping Quick Start guide is a good start, we recommend referring to the more detailed articles as well.


Automated Extractions

The Piping workflow is designed to start with full automation and then move on to semi-automated extraction.

For more details on the options and settings available for fully automated Pipe extraction, see the Process Scans Options Automated Extractions sections.

However, there are some cases where you may only need to extract a small portion of the entire point cloud. There are other cases where QA would take longer than starting from scratch. In these cases, you may start with Semi-Automated Extraction instead of starting with full automation. Skip straight to the article above if these cases apply to your project.

Rough QA

  • Use Multi Select to delete extraneous data.
  • Open the Part Info SmartSheet. Sort by diameter, shift select, and delete the pipes that are outside of the scope of work.
  • Color pipes by RSME/Coverage values to help clean up false positives.
  • Use the clipping box to help section groups of false positives.

Fine QA

  • Open the Part Info SmartSheet select QA Mode. Sort by Coverage percentage in the Smartsheet to work through the false positive. Work through lower coverage percentage pipes first to save time.

Easy Connect

  • Start Easy Connect with a low tolerance and increase the tolerance in stages to see what yields the best results (you can always ctrl-z to undo).

Semi-Automated Extraction & Connection

  • Select the Extract tool to perform a semi-automated extraction of a pipe.
  • Use the Connect tool. The connect drop down can be opened to access Straights/elbows, Reducers, and/or Tees.
  • Select the Edit tool to adjust the length of a pipe, and the elbow bend radius.

Clean Pipes & Apply Standards

  • Open the Chain Info SmartSheet
  • Select a pipe chain and click Clean (bottom left in the SmartSheet)
  • Select the proper Revit Family (if exporting to Revit) in the Revit Family drop-down menu.
  • Select the proper standard using the Standard drop-down menu.
  • Use the Multi Edit button to apply the Revit Family, and Standards to multiple pipe chains.
  • Approve completed pipe chains.
  • Color pipes by approved chain to view what has been worked on.

Insert Valves and Flanges

  • Use the Valve and Flange drop-down menus to place generic family Valves and Flanges in their proper location.
  • Use the Slide and Rotate tools for proper placement.

Export

  • Use a file format that fits the deliverable project.
  • Export Remainder Cloud or Smart Points for additional point data.
