Process Scans

This section will go over some information about processing your scans.

Process Scans

Process Scans is the first step in any EdgeWise project- before EdgeWise can display a point cloud or make automated extractions, you’ll need to convert your registered scans to a .c3DB Point Database model.

To process your scans, click the Process Scans button located under the file tab in EdgeWise.

Upon clicking the Process Scans button, a prompt will ask you to choose your workflow. The Workflow chosen will be determined by the data format of your scan files: Structured, Unstructured, or Point Database.

Workflow Options

Each workflow option has specific requirements, and different use cases. If you select a workflow option that does not work with the scan files you have, you will be automatically redirected to the appropriate workflow. Every workflow can process pipes and walls automatically.

The Structured Workflow can only be used with ununified, terrestrial scan data. This data type often produces the best results and requires the least amount of work to make in registration. However, many users also prefer to not use ununified scan data due to how “messy” it can be to visualize. This is currently the only datatype that can use the Clear View Database, Ground Model Extraction, and Legacy Building Workflow.

The Unstructured Workflow can only be used with unified, or mobile scan data. This data type often completes faster than the Structured Workflow, and can be easier for users to work with due to the clean, focused nature of unified, cropped scan data. This workflow can currently only extract pipes and walls automatically.

The Point Database Workflow can only be used after creating a .c3DB file via one of the other two workflows. This workflow allows users to run the automatic extraction of pipes and/or walls, which enables users to try alternate settings for these options without needing to reprocess the scans again from the beginning, allowing for faster iterations than the first pass.
