Getting Started

This article will cover different aspects of Navigation within EdgeWise. You may find that Navigation is similar in EdgeWise to other CAD programs.

Core of Navigation

Getting around EdgeWise’s 3D space can be extremely efficient, if used well. The first four commands you’ll want to use are going to be orbit, pan, zoom, and tilt.

Orbit only requires a simple left-click and drag. This will orbit your camera around whatever your current focal point is.

Pan requires a middle-mouse click and drag. This will lock your viewing plane and allow you to drag your camera within that 2D plane.

Zoom requires only scrolling forward or backward of your mouse wheel. Alternatively, you can right-click and drag forward or backward. This will push you closer, or pull you further, away from your focal point.

Tilt is performed by CTRLleft clicking and dragging. This will tilt the camera left or right within you current location.

The Focus Tool

Perhaps one of the most important tools to improve navigation efficiency is the Focus tool.

Right-click an object and select Focus, or hover your mouse over an object and press F. This will change your focal point to where you pressed F or right-clicked.

All other navigational tools will now stem from this new focal point. It’s IMPERATIVE to use this Focus tool to efficiently navigate in EdgeWise.

Fly Camera allows you to change from the default view mode to a fly mode. Activating this camera mode is simple. Navigate to the View tab and check Fly Camera. Now left-clicking and dragging forward or backward will slowly move your camera forward or backward. Left-clicking and dragging left or right will begin to pan your camera left or right. Right-clicking and dragging up or down will rotate your camera up or down. Finally, clicking in your middle-mouse button and moving your mouse up or down will cause your camera to move up or down on the Z-axis.

Lock Camera allows you to lock your camera in space and rotate from that locked position. This is similar to how navigation works when inside of a scanner view. Navigate to the View tab and check Lock Camera and your camera will be locked in its current position.

Zoom Model will zoom out your camera until your currently selected model is entirely in view.

Zoom Extents acts just like the Zoom Model button. However, Zoom Extents will zoom out your camera until your entire project is in view.

The X, Y, and Z buttons will change your camera view to any of these planes. Holding Shift and clicking these buttons will change your camera view to the inverse of these planes.

Lock Z-Axis, when checked, will keep your camera from tilting as your orbit around. Un-checking this option will allow your camera to tilt while navigating without using tilt navigation option.

You can change between Perspective and Orthographic view by using the drop-down menu in the View tab.

You can jump into scanner views by either double-clicking a scanner orb or using the first drop-down menu in the View tab. Click Scanner Locations in the Model Selection Pane to turn on scanner orbs.
